Hello everyone! Welcome to our Papagaio Portuguese /school/. Are you ready to learn one of the first and most important verbs for speaking Portuguese? Today, we are going to master the verbo SER. In English, you use one verb for everything: “to be”. But in Portuguese, “to be” is split into two different verbs: SER and ESTAR. It sounds tricky, but it’s easy! Today, we will focus only on SER.
Keep learning! explore our guide on verbs to boost your progress.
We use SER for permanent or essential characteristics. Think about the things that don’t change every day: your name, your profession, your nationality, and where you are from. Let’s learn how to use it!
Part 1: The Verbo SER (To Be) – Your Personal ID
First, let’s learn the conjugation of SER in the present tense. Instead of a big table, let’s see it in action with useful sentences you will need every day!
Eu sou o John. (I am John.) → Say your name.
Ela é do Canadá. (She is from Canada.) → Say someone’s origin.
Você é estudante? (Are you a student?) → Ask about a profession.
Eles são engenheiros. (They are engineers.) → Talk about a profession.
Ele é simpático. (He is nice.) → Describe a person’s personality.
Nós somos amigos. (We are friends.) → Describe a relationship.
Vocês são brasileiros? (Are you [all] Brazilian?) → Ask about nationality.
Crucial Tip: Gender Agreement! In Portuguese, words have a gender (masculine or feminine). The adjective must match the subject. Look at the difference: · Eu sou alto. (I am tall.) – said by a man. · Eu sou alta. (I am tall.) – said by a woman. · Ele é italiano. (He is Italian.) · Ela é italiana. (She is Italian.)

Part 2: How to Say Where You Are From: The Magic of SER + DE
A very common and important use of SER is to talk about your origin. The structure is simple: SER + DE.
The question is:
De onde você é? (Where are you from?)
The answer is:
[Subject] + SER + DE + [place]
· De is a preposition that means “of” or “from.”
But sometimes, you will see DO and DA. Why? It’s a simple contraction (a combination) of DE + O (the) or DE + A (the).
· DE + O = DO (used with masculine words)
· DE + A = DA (used with feminine words)
We use DO or DA when the name of the country or city needs the word “the”.
Examples:
· Eu sou de Londres. (I am from London.) – Most cities use just “de”.
· Ela é do Brasil. (She is from Brazil.) – O Brasil (masculine).
· Nós somos da Itália. (We are from Italy.) – A Itália (feminine).
Simple Rule: If you would say “the” before the place in English (e.g., the United States), you probably need DO/DA. For most city names, just use DE.
